Metal contamination in soils

The Centre for Contaminant Geoscience (CCG) was engaged to design a remediation technique to maximise the onsite reuse of soil after metal contamination in soils had occurred.

THE SOLUTION
CCG developed a technique to immobilise metals such as lead and mercury in soil through the formation of non-soluble mineral complexes. This technique mitigates the associated environmental and health impacts and has the potential to be used on complex mixtures of metals.

THE APPLICATION
The process was successfully undertaken at field scale through the use of a Mobile Unit for Soil Treatment to treat a total of 4,000m³ onsite. Consequently, cost savings to the site owner were significant.
